Best Shirts for Boating and Sailing in Florida Heat
Melissa and I live in Hernando Beach, on Florida's Nature Coast. Most of our free time is spent on the Gulf of America, in the shallow flats or running offshore. After enough summers out there, I've learned that what you wear matters almost as much as what you pack. Here is what I've found works, and why.
Sun, Heat, Spray and Wind: What You're Up Against
Florida water days stack several things against you at once. The sun comes from above and bounces back up off the water. The air is hot and humid, so sweat doesn't evaporate the way it does inland. Spray soaks your sleeves on the run out, and the wind dries you, then burns you, without your noticing. A good boating shirt has to handle all of it: cover skin, move moisture, dry quickly and stay comfortable for hours.

What Coast Guard Flying Taught Me About Long Days Outdoors
Flying taught me to plan for the whole day, not just the start of it. Weather, fuel and daylight all change, and your plan has to change with them. A shirt is not survival gear, and I won't pretend it is. But the habit of preparing for the long haul carries over: dress for hour six, not minute one.
From My Flight Log: Searching the Caribbean
During my assignment at Air Station Borinquen in Puerto Rico, I flew HU-25 Falcons on missions throughout the Caribbean. One search, in July 2001, involved the French fishing vessel Sapajou.
We covered more than a thousand square miles over more than six hours, working intermittent radar contacts while keeping a close eye on our fuel. Eventually, our search efforts helped another vessel, Sunshine II, reach and recover the survivor.
That experience reinforced how much time and distance matter on the water. Whether I'm flying over it or boating on it, I try to remember that conditions and available resources can change during the day.
Cotton Tees vs. Performance Shirts vs. Sun Hoodies
Cotton tees are comfortable on shore and fine for a short evening cruise. On the water, cotton holds sweat and spray, gets heavy, and dries slowly.
Performance sun shirts are made from lightweight technical polyester that wicks moisture and dries fast. A shirt rated UPF 50 blocks about 98% of UV rays, according to standard UPF ratings. Not every performance shirt is rated, so check each listing. Our Coast Guard Jayhawk Rescue Helicopter UPF 50+ Sun T-Shirt is a 4.1 oz technical polyester tee with built-in UPF 50+ protection. For more coverage, the Coast Guard C-130 Hercules UPF 50+ Sun Long Sleeve Shirt adds full sleeves with tapered wrists.
Sun hoodies add a hood that covers your neck and ears, two spots that burn easily. The Florida Skinny Water Slam White UPF Hoodie is an extra-light polyester hoodie with UPF 50+ protection.

I go deeper on fabrics and styles in my guide to UPF fishing shirts.
What I Wear on the Water
Inshore and the flats. Shallow water means glare from every direction. I wear a UPF hoodie with the hood up, like the Skinny Water Slam, or the Coast Guard MH-65 Dolphin UPF 50+ Sun Hoodie.
Offshore. Long runs and long hours mean I want full sleeves. The Chasing the Bite UPF 50+ Sun Long Sleeve Shirt or the Air Land Sea Search and Rescue Octopus Long Sleeve Sun Shirt UPF 50+ is what I reach for.

Sailing. On a sailboat you're moving around, handling lines and ducking the boom. A long sleeve with tapered wrists keeps the sleeves in place. Whether to wear a hood depends on the wind; some sailors find it catches a breeze.
Casual and dockside. Back at the dock, a regular tee like the MH-60T Jayhawk Coast Guard Helicopter Shirt works fine for dinner and the ride home.
A Lifetime Around the Water
From My Flight Log: Fishing and Diving in Great Inagua
During my Coast Guard assignment at Air Station Clearwater, I deployed several times to Great Inagua in the Bahamas for Operation Bahamas, Turks and Caicos.
We typically spent about two weeks there. The work involved helicopter patrols and law-enforcement operations, but there was also time away from duty.
When we weren't flying, we fished, snorkeled, dove, caught lobster, cooked, and enjoyed being around the water.
I remember that part of the deployments fondly. Aviation was my profession, but being on the water was something I enjoyed outside the aircraft, too.
That connection continues today through fishing and boating along Florida's Nature Coast.
How I Choose a Boating Shirt
Fabric: Lightweight technical polyester for long days. Save cotton for shore.
Coverage: Long sleeves and a hood cover more skin. Look for a UPF rating on the listing.
Fit: Loose enough to move and cast, not so loose it flaps in the wind. Our UPF shirts list a true-to-size fit.
Moisture: Moisture-wicking, quick-dry fabric keeps you cooler after spray or sweat.
Color: Lighter colors tend to feel cooler in direct sun. The UPF rating is what tells you about UV protection.
Maintenance: Follow the care label. Ours say machine wash cold and tumble dry low.
A shirt is one layer. I still use sunscreen on exposed skin, drink plenty of water, and get into shade when I can.
Why Melissa and I Make SAR DOG
Melissa and I started SAR DOG in Hernando Beach to make shirts we'd actually wear, with designs that honor the search and rescue community we came from. If you're shopping for someone from that world, our Coast Guard Aviation Gift Guide is a good place to start.

Final Thoughts
There's no single perfect shirt for every Florida water day. Match your coverage to how long you'll be out and how much sun you'll take. Start with a UPF long sleeve or hoodie, keep a dry tee for the dock, and plan for the whole day. You can browse everything in our Fishing & Performance collection, and read more in my UPF fishing shirt guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best shirt for boating in Florida heat?
For most days, a lightweight long sleeve shirt with a UPF rating on its listing. It covers your arms, wicks sweat and dries quickly after spray. On bright flats days, a UPF hoodie adds neck and ear coverage.
Is a UPF long sleeve better than a cotton tee?
For long hours on the water, usually yes. A UPF 50 rating means the fabric blocks about 98% of UV rays, and technical polyester dries faster than cotton. Cotton still works well for short trips and time ashore.
Are sun hoodies comfortable in Florida humidity?
A lightweight, moisture-wicking hoodie can be comfortable, because the fabric moves sweat away and dries quickly. Comfort varies by person and conditions. I wear the hood up in strong sun and push it back when there's shade or a breeze.
Should I wear a hooded or non-hooded shirt for sailing?
It depends on the conditions and on you. A hood covers your neck and ears, but in strong wind some sailors find it catches air. A UPF long sleeve with a hat and a neck covering is another option.
Do light colors block more UV?
Not necessarily. Lighter colors tend to feel cooler in direct sun, but the UPF rating on the listing is what tells you how much UV the fabric blocks. Choose by rating first, then color for comfort.
What shirt dries fastest after spray?
Lightweight technical polyester generally dries faster than cotton. Our UPF shirts are 100% technical polyester and their listings describe them as moisture-wicking and quick-drying. Drying time depends on sun, wind and humidity.
How should a boating shirt fit?
Loose enough to cast, reach and move around the boat, but not so loose that it flaps in the wind or snags. Our UPF shirts list a true-to-size fit. Check the size chart on each product page before ordering.
Can I wear the same shirt for fishing, sailing and everyday?
Yes. A lightweight UPF long sleeve or hoodie works for fishing, sailing and running errands on a hot day. I often wear mine from the boat ramp to lunch. Just follow the care label so it lasts.
